Timothy’s internal warning system went off. He’d been pretty confident that his charm offensive and deep pockets would lock down the first husband spot. But now it dawned on him that Cheiron was the real competition.

“Dear, I had no idea you’d been through so much.” Timothy leaned in, dropping his voice. “Those guys are absolute trash.”

Margaret held his gaze for a long while. She’d originally written him off as some slick rich kid laying on the charm to win points.

But the longer she looked, the more she saw genuine emotion swimming in Timothy’s eyes.

If he was putting on an act, he deserved an Interstellar Oscar. Even Phoebe’s acting skills would have to take a backseat to his.

What Margaret didn’t realize was that Timothy’s feelings were completely real. His mother Eileen had drilled one lesson into him above all else. “Protect your family, no matter the cost.” From the second the Central Brain matched him with Margaret, he’d already added her to his inner circle of people to shield.

His people getting trampled by some S-class nobodies? Not a chance he’d let that slide.

Baar felt exactly the same way. His forehead was creased with a deep frown.

He ran through the files of Margaret’s three ex husbands in his head. He recalled that one of them, a guy named Kiran, was currently serving in the Federal Military as a colonel in Legion 3.

Margaret noticed the change in Baar’s expression.

She suddenly recalled what Primo had told her about the original storyline, that Baar would meet his end at Kiran’s hands. Back then, she’d casually promised that if Baar ended up as her beastman husband, she’d find a way to help him.

Now he was sitting right across from her, and she had no clue how to broach the subject.

“Hey, that subordinate of yours named Kiran is going to kill you one day?” Baar would probably have her locked up in a psychiatric ward.

Margaret looked at Baar, her eyes filled with a mix of curiosity and uncertainty. Baar met her gaze and picked up on her hesitation.

“Margaret Greene.” He straightened up, addressing her by her full name in a grave tone. “We’re partners now. I’m not going to ignore what happened to you. I’ll see that you get justice.”

Margaret’s heart stuttered for no reason she could explain.

She’d be lying if she claimed it didn’t affect her. No one had ever told her in such a straightforward way, “I’ll get justice for you.”

But two lifetimes of scraping by had built a deep reluctance to lean on anyone else into her bones. She wasn’t comfortable depending on other people, and she certainly wasn’t in the habit of exposing her vulnerabilities.

She raised an eyebrow, squashed the odd flutter in her chest, and slipped on a breezy, careless expression.

“Mr. Iverson,” Margaret said, “Do you have a colonel under you named Kiran?”

Baar nodded. “Yes. His conduct is problematic. I’ll deal with him privately. But the military has its rules. I won’t sabotage him professionally.”

He assumed Margaret was asking him to use his position to take Kiran down from within the military.

Margaret let out a humorless laugh.

“Is that the kind of person you think I am?” she shot back, a hint of sharpness in her voice.

Baar didn’t respond. He’d spent years in a high-ranking position and had seen plenty of people use others to do their dirty work. In that moment, that was exactly what he’d assumed.

“I’ll pay back every bit of that humiliation myself,” Margaret’s smile faded as she looked Baar straight in the eye. “If you do it for me, it means nothing.”

Baar blinked. He hadn’t expected that from her at all. Most females he’d encountered were delicate and used to hiding behind males when trouble came. He’d assumed Margaret was the same, that she’d need him to handle everything.
