“Sir, it’s already seven. Everyone has already left and there isn’t much work for you as well. Please, go home and take some rest. You have been here for last two days.” My secretory said.
“I’ll stay here for a little longer. You can take your leave now.” I said in a dismissive tone.
He opened his mouth to say something but he nodded his head.
“Good night, Sir. Please, take some rest from work.” He said and left.
I was left alone again.
I was looking out of the window of my office. I had shifted on the top floor of my office to preserve my privacy. Only my secretory and the most senior executives were allowed to come to my floor.
The city was illuminated and people were busy in their lives.
But I was stuck where I was four years ago.
Living alone without my family for years wasn’t easy. I tried building high walls around me but I failed.
For the world, I was a cold, strict boss. I fired even the most skilled people on the smallest mistake. People around me were scared of me. They didn’t stay around me for longer than necessary.
But the reality was different. I wanted to keep them away because I was afraid to get attached to people around me or show them how lonely I was.
Tearing my gaze from the sight in front of me, I opened the mini freezer and picked a bottle of scotch. Drinking was my best companion. As soon as I was done with my work, I let myself consumed by the effect of alcohol which numbed my ability to feel anything.
It was my other way to escape the pain.
“Logan, it’s not even eight and you have started drinking?” Felix walked into my office.
“I think I have to change the safety password. I have allowed you to visit my office but not this often.” I rolled my eyes and swallowed the bitterness. It burned my throat but I felt better.
“It’s enough, you’re only damaging your health, Logan. Don’t forget that you have a company to run and nobody wants a drunken president. Your family is worried for you. Why aren’t you responding to their calls and texts?” He lectured me.
I chuckled dryly.
“My family? Come on, Felix. I don’t have a family. I am all alone because everyone dumped me.” I said flatly.

“Don’t say like this. We all care about you. I know what Uncle Kevin did felt wrong to you but he had his own reasons and he apologized many times. Please, forgive him. He’s pooling in his own guilt.” He said.
“He had no right to make decisions about my family. He gave permission to Tessa to leave me. How could he kill his own son’s happiness?”
“Logan, you are right but he’s regretting. Give him a chance.” Felix made a futile attempt to convince me.
“What brings you here?” I changed the subject.
“I came to invite you for my house warming party, Logan. Please, don’t turn me down this time. I and Amanda will be happy to have you on our special day. It’s our dream house and we want to celebrate it with close family. You’re my brother, Logan.”
I had alienated myself from family gatherings and private parties because I hated to be judged or hear gossips about my personal life.
The second reason was to avoid my parents.
“Please, Logan.” He insisted.
“Okay, I will try to come but I can’t promise you anything.” I gave in because he was the only person who stood by my side even when I behaved rudely.
“Thanks, brother. Amanda will be happy to hear this.” He smiled.
“My parents will also be there?” I asked.
“They are my uncle and aunt. How can I exclude them?” He looked at me helplessly.
I hadn’t talked to my father in last four years, even if I talked it was only about business and only during briefings. I had cut ties with my family completely.
“I am taking my leave now but don’t forget your promise. My wife will drag you to the party herself.” He reminded me.
As he was about to leave, I spoke.
“Do you also believe that I forced Tessa to leave?”
He stopped and turned around. I never mentioned Tessa after the day when my father told me that Tessa was fed up of my lack of accountability and her trust was wavering.
“No, it was definitely not you, Logan but Raelynn Cowper.” His response came without hesitation.
