**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 209: The Morning After Mistake**
“Chloe, I know I messed up. Please forgive me.” Arthur’s voice was soft, almost pleading, as he spoke, his words laced with a sincerity that made his heart ache. He held his hand to his lips, as if trying to hide the tremor in his voice, the weight of his regret palpable in the air between them.
Jennifer took a deep breath, forcing herself to remain composed. “You love me? How much, exactly?” she asked, her tone a mix of skepticism and hope, her eyes searching his for a hint of truth.
“My heart… it only has you in it,” he declared, his gaze unwavering. “I swear, I’ll treat you right this time.” With that, he pulled her into his arms, their lips meeting in a desperate kiss that spoke of longing and lost moments.
Jennifer didn’t resist. She surrendered to Arthur’s messy, impassioned embrace, allowing the warmth of his desperation to envelop her. It was a night destined to spiral out of control, and they both knew it.
As dawn broke, Arthur awoke to a relentless pounding in his head, a hangover that felt like a jackhammer against his skull. He reached for his phone on the bedside table, but his arm felt heavy, as if it were trapped beneath the weight of the world.
With a groan, he forced his eyes open, blinking against the morning light that cut through the fog in his mind. The first thing that registered was bare skin beside him. Panic surged through him, and he shot up in bed, heart racing.
A soft, feminine sound came from the figure next to him, and Arthur’s heart plummeted. That voice… it couldn’t be…
His mind cleared in an instant, as if he had been doused with ice water. “Jennifer? What are you doing here?” he rasped, his voice hoarse and raw.
The woman beside him stirred, slowly sitting up without a hint of modesty. She met his wide-eyed gaze, her own voice quivering slightly. “Arthur, I’m so sorry.”
Stunned, he could only stare at her, words failing him.
“I just couldn’t stay away from you. I came back secretly,” she confessed, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. “I only wanted to see you from a distance. But when I found you completely drunk last night, I thought I could help. But you were so… insistent. I…” She turned her head away, a deep blush creeping across her skin. “I couldn’t push you away. I had to… Arthur, I’m really sorry.”
Arthur’s gaze fell to the marks on her skin, and his mind went blank, overwhelmed by confusion.
How did this happen? Why? He struggled to piece together the fragmented memories of the night before. A vague dream lingered in his mind, one where he saw Chloe. He thought… he thought it was Chloe…
What was wrong with him? How could he have lost control like that?
As Arthur wrestled with his thoughts, a loud knock echoed through the room, causing both of them to freeze in place. Suddenly, the reality of their situation crashed down on him. This was just a cheap express hotel, and if the paparazzi got wind of this, it would spell disaster for him.
He reached for his phone, intent on calling Donald to manage the chaos, but before he could dial, the door swung open violently. A group of people who looked suspiciously like reporters rushed in, their cameras clicking wildly.
“Mom, just leave it. What’s done is done. My head is a mess right now. I need some space to think,” Arthur said, his voice heavy with exhaustion as he rubbed his temples, trying to stave off the impending headache.
“Space to think? You saw those vultures—they took countless pictures! If this scandal gets out, where will our family’s reputation end up?” Madilyn slammed her hand on the table, her frustration boiling over. “You represent the Myers Group! Do you have any idea how many people this affects?”
Arthur sat there, dazed, the weight of her words crashing down on him. “I’ll take responsibility for Jennifer,” he declared, his tone resolute.
At this, Jennifer’s eyes flickered with surprise, and the corner of her mouth curled into a faint, almost invisible smile, a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
“Take responsibility? How? By marrying her?” Madilyn shot back, her voice dripping with disbelief.
Arthur stood up abruptly, frustration bubbling to the surface. “Mom, I have more urgent matters to deal with right now. We’ll handle this later.” He glanced at Jennifer, hesitated for a brief moment, and then strode out of the room, determination in his steps.
“Arthur, get back here!” Madilyn shouted after him, but he was already gone, not daring to look back.
The room fell into a heavy silence, the tension thickening. Madilyn turned her icy gaze to Jennifer, her expression hardening into one of cold fury.
