Arthur didn’t press further. He could feel from the firm grip on his arm that Frank was in a state of profound grief.

Frank moved slowly forward until he stood before the casket. He reached out a trembling hand and rested it gently on the dark polished wood.
“Charles! How could you go like this!
“I’m two years your senior. I’m still here, how could you leave before me?” Frank’s voice broke with a sob. He patted the casket a few times, as if trying to reach through it, venting the deep ache in his heart. “Charles, get up. Let’s analyze the market trends one more time. I want to hear you argue your investment theses with me again!
“The younger generation is all grown; they won’t listen to us old men anymore, but you and I still had plenty to discuss.
“Charles, say something!
“I haven’t left yet, how could you go first! Get up!”
Frank’s emotions grew more and more unsteady. He swayed on his feet, looking as if he might collapse. Arthur quickly moved to support him.
“Frank, please, sit down and rest.”
“Frank, you mustn’t distress yourself like this. Death is irreversible. Charles passed very peacefully.”
Other senior members of the Myers family stepped forward as well, helping to guide Frank to a nearby chair.
“Frank, please, have some water.” Madilyn, dressed in simple, somber black, approached holding a glass.
Frank glanced at her, his eyes darkening slightly. He seemed to consider saying something but held his tongue.
“Ah! Charles, you wait for me. When my time comes, well continue our debates wherever we end up next!”
Frank’s agitation gradually subsided into exhausted sorrow. Worried about him, Arthur asked his aide, Donald, to stay by Frank’s side in case he needed anything.
As the current head of the household, Arthur was inundated with responsibilities. He was constantly moving, acknowledging the relatives and associates who had come to pay their respects.
Charles‘ passing had been abrupt. By the time Arthur had reached the hospital, the doctors had already pronounced his grandfather gone.
Charles‘ health had been fragile, requiring constant care. After sustaining such severe injuries, the doctors had warned that the end was only a matter of time; he didn’t have much left.
Arthur had tried to prepare himself mentally. Yet, when the final moment arrived and the words were spoken aloud, the loss was still unbearable.
Suddenly, that steadfast, imposing presence that had always anchored his life was gone. Everything felt unsettlingly different.

A fresh wave of heartache hit him, and Chloe’s face flashed, unbidden, in his mind.
Arthur mocked himself inwardly. Did he even have the right to think of her anymore?
Looking at the crowd around him, he knew there were countless things demanding his attention. The immediate priority was his grandfather’s memorial service.
“Arthur, are you alright?”
The voice startled him from his thoughts. He turned and saw Jennifer standing before him.
She was wearing a simple black dress. Arthur’s eyes immediately caught the black mourning band on her arm. His expression tightened.
Given the circumstances, and since they were not yet married, Jennifer hadn’t been included in the immediate family circle for the private service at the estate. Yet here she was, wearing the symbol of family
bereavement.
“Jennifer, you didn’t need to come to the service,” Arthur said, his voice quiet and flat.
“Arthur, I was worried about you,” Jennifer said, reaching for his hand, her voice thick with concern. “Jenarth is worried too. He came with me.” She glanced back over her shoulder. Behind a stone column in the hall, Jenarth was peeking out, watching them.
When Arthur looked over, Jenarth ducked back nervously, as if afraid to be seen, but Arthur had spotted him instantly.
“Arthur, I know in my current position I perhaps shouldn’t be here. But I’m grieving for Charles too. He meant so much to you. As your future wife, I feel that no matter what anyone thinks, I should stand by your side when you need support the most.”
“Jennifer, I-”
“Arthur, I know how heartbroken you must be,” Jennifer continued softly, cutting him off. “What I want you to know is that you still have us. You have Jenarth, and you have… our future child.” As she spoke, she took Arthur’s hand and gently guided it to rest on her abdomen.
“Arthur, can you feel it? Here, inside me, is our baby. He’s still so very tiny, but he’s there, safe and sound. He’s looking forward to meeting his daddy too.” Jennifer’s voice dropped to a tender, intimate whisper. “Arthur, the baby and I both need you. Please, you have to take care of yourself.”
When Arthur heard the word “baby“, he went very still. He looked down at Jennifer’s still–flat stomach, and a flicker of something soft and painful stirred in his eyes.
She was right. Jennifer and the child… They did need him.
