He Didn’t Look for Me Until I Was Dead (by Durrin) novel Chapter 26

Chapter 26

This deafening noise had haunted my nightmares for so many years.

Before I lost consciousness, I saw Calvin push Georgia forward.

In my dazed state, I thought, it’s over, looks like this time, I’ll end up deaf again.

When I woke up again, the first thing I saw was the hospital ceiling.

Everything around me was silent; I couldn’t hear a single sound.

My heart suddenly sank, a sense of unease spreading through me.

In front of me were my parents, whom I hadn’t seen in a long time. When they saw I was awake, they seemed to be saying something.

But I couldn’t hear a word.

It’s over, this time both my ears are deaf.

I can’t hear.

I said.

As soon as I said this, my parentsexpressions froze.

Then, chaos erupted, and a group of people in white coats rushed in.

A doctor came over and gave me a quick examination.

Then, with a look of regret, he shook his head at my parents.

Although this result wasn’t what I expected, I had been deaf in one ear before. It was hard to accept, but not impossible.

At least I’m still alive, aren’t I?

Thinking of this, I asked, Where’s Georgia?

My mother started to say something, but I frowned and said, Mom, write it down, I can’t hear

you.

Only then did she look startled, remembering the situation.

I saw her write on a piece of paper: Gia is fine, she’s already been discharged.

After all, she’s my younger sister. No matter how strained our relationship is, I still don’t want anything bad to happen to her.

Seeing those words, I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.

But then, something occurred to me, and I asked, What about Calvin?

My mother wrote: He hasn’t woken up yet.

I sat up and rubbed my still aching head.

It seemed he wasn’t in any lifethreatening danger either.

The first person to visit me was a police officer.

I claimed there was a bomb and got everyone out; it all sounded rather suspicious.

Even though I saved many lives, it was inevitable that they would suspect me.

After all, sometimes the person who knows about an explosion and the one who plants the bomb could be the same.

The police officer, though stern, seemed very kind.

Through communicating with pen and paper, I learned that in just the few days I was unconscious, they had already found out the cause of the explosion.

It wasn’t a bomb as I had said, but a gas explosion.

It was just an accident.

So naturally, they ruled out the possibility that I had caused the explosion.

But even now, they still wanted to know how I knew the explosion was about to happen.

I made up a reason: I suddenly smelled a strong odor of gas.

That sounded reasonable enough, so they didn’t stay long and left the hospital.

What saddened me most was when the doctor said that no one knew when my hearing would

return, and maybe I would never hear again for the rest of my life.

On the second day after I woke up, Calvin regained consciousness.

His room wasn’t far from mine, but I had only visited him while he was still unconscious.

Georgia, on the other hand, had already been discharged and kept running to his room every day.

I heard his leg had been hit, but fortunately, the bone wasn’t injured.

Aside from my ears, I didn’t have any other serious injuries.

A few days later, I was discharged.

On the day I left the hospital, I saw Reginald at the entrance, looking travelworn.

His face was full of anxiety, which gradually faded when he saw me.

Then he hurried over to me, saying something as he ran.

Even though I couldn’t hear a word, I could truly feel the strength of his embrace.
