He Didn’t Look for Me Until I Was Dead (by Durrin) novel Chapter 31

Chapter 31

So I forced myself to turn my head away, refusing to look at the expression on his face, and tried to ignore the bittersweet softness welling up in my heart.

After a long silence, perhaps afraid I would feel awkward, Reginald spoke again in a deliberately relaxed tone to ease the atmosphere: It’s all right. You can just tell me where you want to go, maybe I can give you some useful advice.

This time, I had no way to refuse his kindness any longer.

After we finished our meal, Reginald insisted on accompanying me to see the apartment I was about to rent, no matter what I said.

In his words: You’re just starting out in society, it’s easy for people to take advantage of you.

I raised my eyebrows, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. Although I had already been working for several years, I had to admit that my face did look rather gullible. Bringing Reginald along would

indeed save me some trouble.

On the way, he suddenly asked me, What about him?

I didn’t catch on and asked, Who?

Reginald tried hard to appear nonchalant: Him, Calvin. Why haven’t I seen him these past few days?

I was taken aback, and only then did I realize that, indeed, I hadn’t seen him since the graduation

ceremony.

But I didn’t know where he had gone either, so I just shook my head at Reginald: I don’t know either, maybe he went back to school.

It’s graduation season, after all, and everyone probably has a lot to deal with.

Reginald nodded thoughtfully, then suddenly said, I’ve decided to go back to my home country.

I looked at him and asked, Why? You’re doing so well abroad, why do you suddenly want to go back?

Reginald smiled and said, The domestic market has a lot of potential too. Of course I can’t miss

out on that.

I nodded in agreement. That was certainly true.

It wasn’t until he helped me rent the apartment and move all my things from the dorm that Reginald finally went abroad again.

He had started a company overseas, and I figured he had a pile of things waiting for him to handle.

On the day he left, I went to the airport to see him off.

Before leaving, Reginald leaned in and hugged me tightly, giving a meaningful reminder: Wait for me to come back, and don’t you dare fall for anyone else.

I couldn’t help but laugh and nodded, then urged him, Go on, if you keep dawdling, you’ll miss your flight.

Seeing that time was running out, Reginald finally left, reluctant to part.

Sitting in the taxi leaving the airport, I watched his plane streak across the sky.

For some reason, a faint sense of reluctance rose in my heart.

I quickly reached out and pressed my hand to my slightly aching chest.

In my heart, I kept warning myself not to fall so easily againthe price was simply too high.

Georgia and I lived in different places, and we barely kept in touch or saw each other throughout almost all four years of college.

So when I got her call after returning from my trip, my first reaction was disbelief.

Then I immediately felt that something was wrong, a sense of foreboding rising in my heart.

The moment I answered the phone and heard Georgia’s sharp voice, I knew that uneasy feeling was probably about to come true.

She didn’t even bother with pleasantries, launching straight into a barrage of questions: Whitney! Was this your doing!!

I didn’t say a word, quietly waiting for Georgia to finish.

Then I heard her rattle off, Cal didn’t even attend my graduation ceremony, but instead traveled all the way to yours! If you weren’t still in touch with him, if you hadn’t said something to him, why would he treat me like this?!

I just felt baffled: Georgia, what’s wrong with you?

“Calvin is an adult. Whatever he does is his own decision! How could I possibly force him? If you have time to come here and act crazy at me, why don’t you go ask him yourself?! You two are in the same city!

After I finished, I heard Georgia’s sobs come through the phone: I can’t find him! His classmates said he went to New York!

Her voice turned angry again: He must have gone to see you!
