Hanson’s face turned ghostly pale. “You’re going to be the death of me. I’m done talking to you.”
The group chat finally quieted down.
Teresa rolled over and buried her face in the pillow. Her mind was a mess, drifting from thoughts of Jared to Lawrence, and then, out of nowhere, Garry. They hadn’t seen each other in ages, so why did he pop into her head like that? The more she thought about it, the more annoyed she felt. She couldn’t even explain it to herself.
Sunday arrived, warm and bright, the kind of day that just felt easy.
Teresa headed to the nicest care home in Harrisburg. Ever since Eric landed in jail and The Baker Group went under, she’d been the one handling all of Janetta’s expenses. Janetta’s legs didn’t work the way they used to. She had to rely on medication and the costs added up fast.
Teresa brought along some fresh fruit and Janetta’s favorite flowers. She made her way past a gleaming white building, spotting Janetta outside in her wheelchair, enjoying the day. The nurse beside her was gently massaging her legs, and the two of them seemed to be sharing a good laugh.
Teresa watched from a little ways off, then waved. “Grandma.”
Janetta saw her right away, her eyes shining. “Teresa.”
Teresa hurried over. Janetta reached out, grabbing her hand with excitement. “What brings you here, Teresa? Your mom just visited a few days ago.”
While she’d been away, Teresa had asked Naomi to stop by and check on Janetta every so often. Naomi and Janetta actually got along great, way better than Janetta did with Leila.
Teresa smiled as she set the flowers in Janetta’s lap. “What, already tired of seeing me?”
