Her words caught Parrish completely off guard.
For a second, his face went blank, then he pulled on a casual smile. “Teresa, are you trying to talk me out of this?”
She didn’t have feelings for him, and honestly, she didn’t want to waste his time. She’d already told him how she felt, but it clearly hadn’t done much.
Teresa kept her cool, her voice steady. “Parrish, I’m just telling you how it is.”
She couldn’t believe someone like him would really want to marry a divorced woman with a kid. Most people would think twice, and she couldn’t blame him for that.
Parrish’s eyes seemed darker in the soft moonlight as he looked at her and stepped a little closer.
“If you care about someone, you have to accept everything about them, their past included. Do you really think I’m that shallow?”
He paused for a moment. “I’ve got a past too. I’ve dated people. Does that make me less worthy?”
“Teresa, I really do like you. I want something real, a future with you. I’m scared that if I let you go, I’ll regret it forever.”
She could feel how genuine he was, but her heart just wouldn’t budge.
Teresa frowned as someone else’s face flashed through her mind.
She let out a frustrated breath. “Parrish, marriage isn’t just about two people. It’s about two families. Even if your parents could accept me, the truth is, I don’t have those kinds of feelings for you. I’m sorry, but I can’t force myself to spend a lifetime settling.”
It didn’t matter what Teresa thought. Those two were totally on board with this so-called match. Teresa just rolled her eyes.
After scrolling through the chat, she finally sent a message. “He might be amazing, but he’s just not my type.”
Hanson replied, “Teresa, isn’t Parrish way better than Jared or Lawrence? You went for those two losers, but you won’t give Parrish a chance?”
Her thing with Jared had been an arranged engagement, and marrying Lawrence had just seemed like the only option at the time. When it came to love, Teresa had always just gone along with what was expected of her. It was never really about love, more like just letting things happen.
She shot back, “Hanson, you’re single too. Why don’t you date Parrish yourself?”
