She charged forward, but Teresa didn’t even flinch. Her foot landed solidly against Leila’s chest, sending her crashing to the floor. Leila glared up, furious, her eyes burning with hatred.
Teresa just stared back, her voice icy and calm. “You’ve spent years living the high life. You could sell off a few handbags or some jewelry and never have to worry about money again. But no, that wasn’t enough for you. You used Felton’s loyalty against him, treating him like your own personal bank. Leila, even if Felton isn’t your real son, he’s called you ‘Mom’ for thirty years. How could you do this to him?”
Leila’s face went pale. She stammered, panic creeping into her voice. “How... how did you find out?”
She whipped her head toward Janetta, her expression twisted with rage. “You told her, didn’t you? You old witch. You just can’t stand to see me happy, is that it?”
Leila’s fear was written all over her face. If Felton learned the truth, he’d stop listening to her. Then who would take care of her? Who would pay her bills?
She scrambled up, still shaking with anger. “Why are you all turning on me? What did I ever do that was so wrong?”
Suddenly she jabbed a finger toward Teresa, her eyes wild. “She’s the one who ruined everything! She got Eric thrown in jail, made Patti blind, got her locked up too. She’s the reason Felton lost his job, the reason he’s given up on himself. And you still act like she’s some kind of angel? Are you blind, you useless old woman?”
Janetta knew exactly what had gone on in Harrisburg. She’d never blamed Teresa for any of it.
Her voice was steady. “Teresa never did anything wrong. It was always you and the others making mistakes.”
Leila practically screamed. “You’re still taking her side? Even now? You’re completely senile. No wonder you don’t have anyone left to take care of you.”
Janetta’s whole body shook with anger. She tried to speak, but the words wouldn’t come. Her hand lifted, pointing at Leila, trembling.
