She tossed the brand-new designer clothes aside, her mood sinking lower by the minute. While she stewed in her frustration, the door opened.
Leila glanced up and saw Felton. She barely looked at him as she said, “It’s almost time for work. What are you doing here?”
Felton walked in, face stormy, and sat down without a word. After a moment, he asked, “Mom, did you go see Grandmother today to ask her for money?”
Leila’s eyes flicked away, her tone casual but her nerves obvious. “I was just visiting her.”
Felton looked at her, his voice sharper now. “Were you really just visiting? Didn’t you ask her for money? Didn’t you upset her so much she landed in the hospital?”
Leila stared back at him, not even pretending to feel guilty. “Felton, are you interrogating me? I’m your mother.”
“Exactly, Mom. You’re my mother, that’s why I’m trying to talk to you calmly. Grandmother’s old. You know her health isn’t great. If we can’t do more for her, at least let’s not make things harder.”
Leila heard him, but only the first part of his words stuck with her.
If he ever found out I’m not his real mom, would he just leave me behind?
A frown creased her brow and worry gnawed at her.
No, I have to get whatever I can from him before he figures things out.
She put on her most heartfelt voice. “Felton, I’m doing all this for you and Patti. Patti needs help with her connections, and you’ll need money when you get married someday. My illness isn’t important. Even if I die from it, it doesn’t matter. But I can’t just sit back and do nothing for you two. That’s why I asked your grandmother for help. I never wanted to upset her.”
Leila’s softer tone worked its magic. Felton’s anger faded.
She was doing it all for them. If he was honest, he was the one who hadn’t provided for Leila or helped Patti the way he should.
