The ceramic cup was made during a pottery date with Nelson; it even had both of their signatures etched on the bottom.
Whenever reality became too suffocating, she would take it out and hold it in her hands, treating it like a cure for her hidden wounds.
Yara noticed her spacing out while staring at the cup. Wiping her tired face with a towel, she said, "I heard he bought Lydia a mansion overseas and gave his daughter a limitless black card. You were with him for three years, and all you got was a handmade mug, some random rocks, and a few dried leaves?"
In the past, Juniper would have fiercely defended him.
"You don't understand. It's the memories that matter," she used to say.
Yara would always shake her head. "Your personality is exactly why people play you for a fool."
Whenever Yara lectured her, Juniper would lower her head, protectively clutching the cup. It wasn't that she didn't care about money; she just loved Nelson too much and refused to feel like she owed him.
Growing up poor, money was the root of every argument in her house. Feeling financially indebted to him had felt deeply shameful.
If she had accepted his lavish gifts, they would have never been equals.
Back then, all she had wanted was a partnership of equals.
But when the scandal broke, everyone accused her of using him for his status.
They said she was delusional, dreaming that he actually loved her, dreaming that she could take Lydia's place.
Her genuine love had been mercilessly trampled into the dirt. It was Yara who had helped her pack up this 'junk' from the apartment they once shared, holding her as she cried. "You ended up like this because you only cared about love. I told you to get something material out of him. Stop crying, Juniper!"
How could she not cry? She had practically cried herself blind back then.
Yara was about to make another sarcastic comment when Juniper finally spoke. "I was an absolute idiot back then."
Hearing those words out of her mouth left Yara stunned.
Juniper had always been the quintessential good girl. The only reckless thing she had ever done in her life was date Nelson Saint.
It took Yara a moment to process it before she chuckled softly. "I'm glad you've finally snapped out of it. Are you tossing it all?"
"Yeah. Tossing it."
Holding the box, she walked out of the apartment and down to the ground floor of her building.
