He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 208

Beatrice looked over at Nadine. "Go pay his medical bills first."

Nadine's expression instantly soured. The current bill alone would easily top ten thousand dollars. "Mom, are you joking? Where would I get that kind of cash? Ask Brooks how long it's been since he gave me a dime! I can't even afford my own hospital visits. I haven't been to a single prenatal checkup, and I don't even know how we're going to afford baby formula. I finally found him a decent job, and then this nightmare happens. I swear, I just want to end it all."

She covered her face with her hands, her shoulders trembling with theatrical sobs.

Brooks genuinely loved Nadine and carried a heavy burden of guilt toward her. He spoke up, his voice thick with humiliation. "It's true. I haven't given Nadine any money in six months. The last few hundred bucks I scraped together went straight to the hospital for dad's meds. Mom, do you have any cash left?"

Beatrice hadn't breathed a word to anyone about her secret two-million-dollar nest egg. She had entirely different plans for that money.

Her lips trembled as she stammered, "Where would our family have any money left? Your father is still waiting on funds just to stay alive..."

Brooks's face burned with shame. Then, Nadine chimed in. "Call Juniper, then. If she hadn't refused to ask the Saint family to find Brooks a job, he never would've ended up in this mess."

With their backs against the wall, calling Juniper was their only option.

Meanwhile, Juniper was swamped with studio matters. The five employees she had poached from the auction house seamlessly integrated into her team, claiming they vastly preferred her management style. With the new hires filling the gaps, her studio was fully operational again.

She had personally vetted every single one of them and was confident in her choices.

When the call from her family came through, she was out grabbing coffee with a client. The meeting had been arranged by Zara Zimmer.

The client, Valerie Valentine, was one of Zara's subordinates. Valerie had some jewelry she wanted to offload, but she was notoriously difficult to negotiate with and fiercely guarded her asking price.

At that moment, over thirty pieces of jewelry were spread across the table between them, ranging from elegant earrings to statement rings.
