Juniper remained silent, her forehead slick with cold sweat. The bone-deep ache from the leather shoe connecting with her body continued to radiate outward. She knew her shoulder would be a canvas of deep purple, and her stomach was likely covered in bruises too.
Cecilia was visibly anxious. The Lawrence family had recently changed heirs, and it was no secret in their social circle that the new successor, Finn Lawrence, was close friends with Nelson Saint. Because of this, Griffin's relationship with Nelson was highly strained. Those kicks just now were absolutely fueled by malicious, displaced anger.
After all, at the wedding banquet, Nelson had treated Juniper with a rare hint of favoritism.
Griffin had been abruptly stripped of his heir status, replaced by a man who had only been brought back into the Lawrence family a few years ago. As the elder figure, the humiliation ate away at him.
His temper had grown increasingly volatile over the past few years, but even Cecilia hadn't anticipated he would take it out physically on a woman.
"Juniper..."
Cecilia had a sinking premonition. If Nelson found out Griffin had laid a hand on Juniper, her husband's precarious position in the family would completely collapse.
Since she was married to Griffin, his downfall would be her own.
Standing a few feet away, Griffin scowled as he watched his wife whispering to Juniper. His tone grew even sharper. "What could you possibly have to say to her? Cecilia, you're really losing your edge."
Every breath Juniper took felt like swallowing glass, but she knew she owed Cecilia a debt for taking that knife.
"Ms. Saint, keep your daughter away from me from now on."
Cecilia exhaled a shaky breath, her complexion improving slightly. "I know Felicity. You terrified her tonight. She'll walk the other way the second she sees you. She's scared enough to never provoke you again."
That was the best outcome.
Juniper turned and began to limp away.
Seeing this only infuriated Griffin more. "You're just going to let her walk away?"
Cecilia quickly stepped in front of him, her voice dripping with fatigue. "Keep my injury quiet for now."
Griffin looked annoyed, but he desperately needed Cecilia's support. They had been trying for a son recently, but her body just wasn't cooperating.
