Yvonne sounded baffled. "You called just to tell me that?"

Nelson's chest felt even tighter. "Is that not enough? Aren't you always worried about her?"

Yvonne hung up on him. She stared at her phone, turning to Reginald Shaw beside her. "Don't you think he's becoming far too temperamental? Especially when it comes to Juniper, he's always on edge. Still, my old bones won't hold up much longer; it's only right I see more of her."

She started coughing as she spoke.

She was just about to call Juniper when her phone rang again. It was Nelson.

"Never mind, having her come all the way over is a hassle for her. Have the kitchen brew the soup and deliver it to her place. Do it every day for half a month. I doubt she wants to go out much right now anyway."

"What happened to Juniper?"

"Her mother died. Cried until her eyes were swollen shut. Don't you think she's a bit out of her mind? Didn't she claim she hated Beatrice? Now she's dead, and she's crying her heart out over it."

Listening to his arrogant, matter-of-fact tone, Yvonne felt a headache coming on. "Do not say things like that in front of her. You are not her; how could you possibly understand what she's going through?"

"Yeah, I'm not her. If my life were as miserable as hers, I'd have thrown myself in a river a long time ago."

Nelson hung up again.

Yvonne was so furious her eyebrows twitched. She wished she could reach through the phone and slap her ungrateful son.

Reggie quickly offered some comfort. "Mrs. Saint, the young master just has a difficult temper."

Yvonne let out a cold laugh. "So just because he has a temper, everyone else is supposed to coddle him? Mark my words, his pride will be his downfall. His mouth is too hard to admit defeat; the more he cares, the more vicious his words become."

Remembering what he had witnessed the other day, Reggie didn't dare say a word.

Yvonne sighed again, instructing Reggie to relay the order to the kitchen. "Bring some of the restorative broth over to Juniper. When she's upset, she tends to bottle it up. Let's not ask her to come over for a while."

Reggie nodded. "Right away."
