After all the commotion, the sky was already beginning to lighten.
He stayed by Josie's side for another hour. The others gradually returned to their rooms to catch up on sleep. The yacht was now on its return journey and was scheduled to arrive back at the docks by noon.
Seeing that Josie still refused to sleep, Nelson changed his clothes and sighed at the little figure huddled under the blankets. "Josie, it's Daddy."
Josie remained stiff. Normally, after such a scare, she would have crashed from exhaustion, but she couldn't sleep. She was as rigid as a board.
Nelson asked her gently, "Did you fall in on your own?"
This time, Josie gave a serious nod. "Yes."
"How could you be so careless?"
"I'm sorry, Daddy."
Her voice was incredibly hoarse, sounding like a weak little kitten.
Nelson couldn't bring himself to blame her at a time like this. He simply patted her back. "Just get some rest for now."
He returned to his own room, but Juniper was nowhere to be seen.
She had left without a word again.
He changed his clothes and stepped out to look for her, only to spot her hearing aid resting on the windowsill in the corridor.
He thought his eyes were playing tricks on him, but it was the exact same hearing aid he had bought for her years ago.
A sudden memory hit him—someone had shouted last night that there was another person in the river.
A violent wave of panic washed over him. He hurried to where everyone had gathered the night before and asked a passing guest, "Did someone else fall into the water last night?"
The guest shook his head. "No. We thought someone did, but it turned out to be just a coat that fell overboard. They already fished it out and returned it to the owner."
Nelson breathed a sigh of relief and rubbed his temples. There was no way it could be such a coincidence.
He pulled out his phone and called Juniper.
It was powered off. Had she still not turned it on?
An inexplicable unease settled over him. He leaned back against the wall and ordered someone to find out which room Dr. Alistair Vaughn was in.
The response came back that Alistair had left on a small boat earlier, citing an emergency at the hospital.
Nelson lowered his gaze and dialed Alistair's number directly.
Alistair was currently sitting by Juniper's hospital bed. She was fine, mostly because she was smart enough to float; fighting the current with brute force would have led to exhaustion and death.
They had already run some tests, and she was perfectly healthy.
Nelson's first words were an aggressive demand. "Is Juniper with you?"
