Nelson had swung by the house the past two days just to check on Moonlight. Both times, Juniper hadn't been home, and the dog bowl had been overflowing with kibble. She really was spoiling the dog rotten.
He stood up and dusted off his hands. "Grandma asked me to bring you some soup. I left it on the counter."
He assumed Brooks was just visiting to check on Walter's declining health. Having no desire to speak to the man, he turned to leave.
But when he opened the door, Alistair was standing right outside.
Alistair was carrying bags of fresh fruit and vegetables. He had called Juniper earlier and only came over knowing she was heading home.
Seeing Nelson, he offered a polite, distant nod and asked Juniper, "Should I put these in the fridge first?"
Juniper pushed Brooks toward the living room, letting out a faint "Mhm."
Standing in the entryway, Nelson watched the three of them move around, completely ignoring him. He felt intensely isolated. To make matters worse, Moonlight immediately ran over to Alistair and happily rubbed against his leg, completely forgetting that Nelson had secretly fed him premium dog food the last two days.
The ungrateful mutt ate his food but showed him zero loyalty.
Fury burned in Nelson's chest. He refused to leave, watching Alistair move around the kitchen as comfortably as if he owned the place. Alistair expertly grabbed a paring knife to peel some fruit and pulled a pristine serving tray from the dishwasher with practiced ease.
After parking Brooks by the sofa, Juniper walked over to the island. "I'll help."
Alistair gently blocked her hand. "No need. Go sit down. You look terrible."
Juniper stood frozen for a moment, her exhausted brain taking a few seconds to process his words.
Nelson should have left right then. The domestic scene playing out before him was excruciating, but his feet felt glued to the floor.
A bitter, suffocating jealousy fermented in his chest, rapidly morphing into vicious hostility.
His Adam's apple bobbed. He spun around, marched straight back to the sofa, and sat down heavily. "Are you cooking? I'll eat before I leave."
Even though absolutely no one had invited him to stay, he brazenly invited himself.
Brooks glared at him, still clutching the urn, his voice dripping with venom. "Can't you see the two of them are perfectly happy? Why are you so desperate to play the homewrecker?"
Years ago, the Lane family had constantly accused Juniper of shamelessly trying to ruin Nelson and Lydia's relationship. Now, the tables had completely turned.
Nelson's face darkened. He had always despised Brooks, viewing him with nothing but disgust. Now, this pathetic cripple dared to mock him?
He scoffed. "A guy who stole his sister's hard-earned money to buy a house is trying to play the protective brother? Has the Lane family not leeched enough blood from her? Juniper was always a pathetic pushover, but your family is absolutely shameless."
