Lydia felt like she was cursed, as if every recent event was perfectly designed to destroy her.
Taking a deep breath, she decided she needed to talk to Nelson face-to-face.
But she wasn't allowed inside his villa, so she had to stand outside with an umbrella, waiting in the pouring rain.
It had been raining in the city since morning. Lydia cut a frail, pitiful figure as she waited until seven in the evening. When she finally saw Nelson's car approach, she rushed forward to block it.
The window rolled down slowly, revealing Nelson's face.
Lydia's eyes immediately reddened. "I called you, and you didn't answer. Nelson, didn't you promise your brother you'd take good care of me?"
The moment those words hung in the air, the surrounding space seemed to plunge into a dead, suffocating silence.
Nelson had always been incredibly close to his older brother, and he never broke a promise made to him.
He stared at the bedraggled woman before him. "If I hadn't promised my brother, your entire family would already be bankrupt."
Lydia's face flushed with humiliation, but she maintained her pathetic, pleading expression. "My family is in chaos. Do you want me to beg on my knees? You can't take those projects away. Nelson, at least do it for Josie."
No matter what, Josie was beloved by the Saint family. She was Lydia's most powerful bargaining chip.
She didn't know what had triggered Nelson's recent madness, but she needed to pacify him immediately.
Before coming, she had called Yvonne. In the entire Saint family, Yvonne was her strongest ally.
"Nelson, during those three years abroad, I was the one by your side. And I haven't breathed a word about that incident to the rest of the family."
Nelson sat in the car in silence. At that moment, another vehicle's headlights flared brilliantly.
The Saint family's chauffeur stepped out, opening an umbrella over Yvonne's head.
