Looking at her powerful in-laws tiptoeing around her feelings like she was made of glass, Scarlett was deeply moved.
The contrast was glaring. In the Flynn family, from the moment she and Yardley Flynn had signed the marriage papers, Corinne and Franklin had harassed her for an heir. When she finally got pregnant, the stress only intensified. Corinne had sneered to her face that girls were useless, and she wouldn't be truly accepted until she produced a boy. When Scarlett was three months along, Corinne demanded an illegal ultrasound to check the gender. Scarlett had refused, but the entire pregnancy had been a nightmare of corporate stress and domestic psychological warfare. Her nerves had been constantly frayed.
When she finally gave birth to Dawn, barely surviving the process, she still vividly remembered Corinne's look of utter disgust when she was wheeled out of the delivery room. When the nurse cheerfully offered the baby to her grandmother, Corinne had stepped back like the child was diseased, making up a pathetic excuse about her nails being too long. She hadn't held Dawn once.
Lying there bleeding on the hospital bed, Scarlett's heart had bled, too. The Flynns had almost convinced her that all wealthy in-laws were that cold and cruel.
But looking at the two people in front of her, practically offering her their hearts on a silver platter, she realized that true family existed.
Scarlett nodded firmly. "Dad, Mom. Julian and I have made up our minds."
"We'll start trying. If there's good news, you'll be the first to know."
Her calm assurance was the ultimate relief. Elara and Dominic grabbed each other's hands, their eyes shining with unfiltered ecstasy.
"Okay, wonderful!" Elara said, nodding rapidly. "But no stress. Just let nature take its course."
Then, she whacked Julian on the shoulder. "As for you! Starting tomorrow, high-protein diet. Hit the gym. You need to be in peak physical condition."
Elara's brain shifted into overdrive. "Tomorrow I'm going to the hospital to talk to my OB-GYN friend about the absolute best prenatal protocols. We need a solid game plan. You both need to be on premium holistic supplements—folic acid, DHA, organic vitamins... oh, and what else..."
