Melanie was stunned by Yardley's shout. It took her several seconds to snap back to reality, her temper flaring. "What is that supposed to mean? You want us to just take this? Yardley, since when did you become such a coward? Dad is dead! If you won't get justice for him now, when will you? I don't care! I'm going to the Thorne estate right now to rip that woman's mouth off!"
Furious, Melanie spun around and marched toward the door.
Smack!
Unable to hold back any longer, Yardley delivered a vicious slap to Melanie's face. The moment his hand made contact, a flash of regret washed over him. But the sheer weight of the grief, pressure, and helplessness he had been burying for days had finally shattered his breaking point.
The sudden strike left Melanie dizzy. She clutched her stinging cheek, staring at Yardley in absolute disbelief. Her voice spiked into a shrill shriek. "Yardley... you hit me?! I'm your sister! You actually laid a hand on me?! Instead of going after that harpy, you attack me? I seriously doubt if you're even a man!"
Seeing her acting so entitled and oblivious, Yardley's disgust reached its peak. His voice was low and cold. "Look at the timing! And you're still throwing tantrums and causing trouble without an ounce of sense! Do you have any idea that the Flynn family is standing on the brink of total annihilation?! If you're going to keep making a mess, get out of this house! I've tolerated you for a long time, Melanie!"
Clutching her burning cheek, she stared blankly at him. For some reason, it felt as though Yardley had suddenly been possessed by Scarlett; he radiated an intimidating aura that made her instinctively flinch.
