He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 17

The moment Scarlett stormed out of the ward, she ran straight into Sylvia being pushed down the hallway by her nanny. Sylvia cradled the baby, whose deafening wails echoed heartbreakingly down the corridor.

Seeing Scarlett, Sylvia's eyes lit up as if grasping at a lifeline. She quickly urged the nanny to push her wheelchair over to Scarlett. "Scarlett, I'm begging you, please give Caleb some milk! I have a fever, so he can't have my milk, and he refuses to take formula. He's been screaming all night!"

Sylvia looked frantic enough to cry, dark bags under her eyes from staying up all night. Scarlett stared at her silently before a cold smirk crept onto her lips. "Sure. Let's find a private room. It's too crowded here to breastfeed."

Sylvia's eyes beamed. Impatiently, she shoved her crying son right into Scarlett's arms. "You're so sweet! I'm leaving Caleb in your hands!"

Scarlett looked down at the chubby infant in her arms. The thought that this child had stolen all the affection that rightfully belonged to her own daughter left her with a chaotic storm of emotions. Holding the baby, she turned and headed back to her ward, her voice icy. "Sylvia, you come in. Everyone else, get out."

Sylvia gave a meek nod. Talia, sensing what Scarlett might be planning, quickly motioned for Zara to take baby Dawn and follow them inside, then firmly shut the door behind them.

The infant in Scarlett's arms continued to cry, his voice raspy and pathetic. Scarlett's face was completely blank as she stood there, making no move to unbutton her shirt. Sylvia grew anxious and pressed her, "Scarlett, what are you waiting for? Feed him! Look at how hard Caleb is crying!"

Scarlett remained frozen. Sylvia snapped in desperation, "Caleb is everyone's precious treasure! Not just The Croft family, but The Flynn family and The Stetson Family too! He is adored by everyone, and absolutely nothing can happen to him!"

"Yardley told me that Caleb is more important to him than anything, and he's sworn to take care of him for my husband! Feed him right now!"

After he drank too much, Scarlett, acting as his apprentice, had helped him to his room. She had wiped his face, cleaned his hands, taken off his shoes, and tucked him in. She had harbored a massive crush on him for a long time by then, but she only dared to keep her feelings buried. After all, Yardley was her mentor and her boss.

Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that Yardley, in his drunken stupor, would pin her to the bed. Everything had escalated so naturally... The next morning, Yardley had woken up to discover the truth and the crimson stain on the sheets.

Scarlett had tried to play it cool, telling him not to worry about it, that it was just a casual night between adults. But Yardley had decisively announced he would take responsibility for her, quickly taking their relationship public.

Scarlett had felt a dazed euphoria, as if she had won millions of dollars in the lottery. For the longest time after they made it official, it had felt like a dream. Especially on their first night living together at Orchard Villa. Staring at the sleeping face of the man who had populated her dreams for so long, she had been overwhelmed with emotion.
