Yardley's eyes widened in horror.
"Julian, it's not what you think..."
Julian's handsome face was now clouded with an impenetrable darkness.
"I already know the truth."
"Exactly one month before you forced me to marry Sylvia, she snuck into your room while you were drunk, hoping to sleep with you. It was Clarissa who caught her and stopped it just in time, which is the only reason nothing happened between you two."
"From that day on, you knew exactly how Sylvia felt about you. So, you wanted to find a man you trusted to pawn her off on. And I was the perfect candidate, wasn't I?"
Yardley shook his head frantically.
"Julian, that's really not how it happened..."
Julian laughed, completely ignoring Yardley's denial.
"Whatever the truth was back then, what's done is done."
"I didn't plan on dragging it up. Since the mistake was made, I figured I'd just live with it. After all, I didn't get to marry the woman I actually loved, so it didn't really matter who I ended up with."
"But as it turns out, your precious cousin is an incredibly messy woman. We've been married for five years, and she's spent those five years making a scene out of everything... I tolerated all of it."
"But no matter how much she acts out, there has to be a limit. A bottom line. Getting knocked up by someone else and then trying to pin the kid on me? That, I will not tolerate."
Julian's words hit like a bombshell. Not only did Yardley physically flinch, but Scarlett's jaw practically hit the floor. She could hardly believe what she was hearing.
Yardley's pupils contracted violently, his voice completely raw. Anger and panic flooded his system.
"Julian, what the hell are you talking about?"
