Scarlett glares at Yardley for another vicious second before looking away, fighting back the tears threatening to spill.
Holding Dawn close, she notices the baby's little face looks noticeably thinner. Her heart bleeds. In just two short days, her daughter has clearly suffered in their care.
When Dawn sees Scarlett, her innocent eyes look a bit dazed before her little mouth turns down in a heartbreaking pout, and she starts crying again. Scarlett rocks her gently, murmuring soft, soothing words. Feeling her mother's familiar warmth, Dawn finally stops crying and drifts off into a peaceful sleep against Scarlett's chest.
Scarlett carefully hands the baby to Stellan, who is standing nearby.
Then, she marches straight up to Yardley and slaps him across the face with everything she has. The sharp crack echoes in the room. Yardley doesn't even try to dodge.
Struggling to keep her composure, she demands, "Why does my daughter have needle marks on her hand?"
Holding his reddened cheek, Yardley looks tense. "She had a fever and was coughing badly after it broke. Dr. Howell suggested an IV would help her recover faster."
Scarlett is so furious she feels dizzy. She slams her fist into his chest. "This is what you meant when you said your whole family loves her and takes good care of her?! Yardley, you had her for one day and let her get sick! And she's only three months old—how could you agree to let a doctor hook her up to an IV?!"
Her chest heaves, so clogged with anger that she can barely breathe.
Yardley rubs his temples, trying to defend himself. "I admit I messed up, but the whole family was genuinely concerned this time. Especially my mom. She used to say awful things, but the moment she saw Dawn, her attitude changed. She personally stayed by her side to take care of her these past two days. She... she might have made things hard for you before, but she's really not... that evil."
Hearing that Corinne was the one looking after Dawn sends Scarlett over the edge. She punches Yardley's chest again. "You really have some nerve, handing my daughter over to your mother! Do you have any idea how much she despises me?! And even now, you're still making excuses for her!"
