He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 386

A dark thought flickered in Yardley's eyes. Remembering the sheer humiliation he had just endured at Scarlett's hands, and meeting the adoring gaze of the woman standing before him... a sudden, overwhelming urge to relentlessly retaliate against his wife took hold of him.

"Well said. You're Veronica Thorne, right?" Yardley stepped closer, his deep voice carrying a dangerous edge.

Veronica's heart soared. "You remember me! Yes, we had dinner a few times five years ago. I've been quietly following your success with the Flynn Group ever since..."

Yardley's lips curled into a calculating half-smile. "Is that so? Are you single?"

She nodded eagerly. "Yes. I've been so focused on my career these past five years, I haven't really dated..."

She was about to confess her undying admiration when Yardley did the unthinkable. He reached out and pulled her flush against him by her waist.

"Perfect. I'm getting a divorce soon. If you don't mind the technicalities, why don't we... give it a try?"

He looked down at her, his dark eyes sending a mysterious, lethal signal. Veronica froze, a jolt of electricity shooting straight down her spine. The man she had considered an unattainable god was actually propositioning her.

Across the room, Melanie and Sylvia were frozen in shock. Sylvia's eyes widened in horror, the apple she was holding slipping from her fingers and hitting the floor with a thud.

"Yardley, you..." Sylvia whispered.

"I would love to!" Veronica's excited, breathless voice completely drowned out Sylvia's pathetic whine. "Honestly, Yardley, I've had feelings for you for five years. I don't care that your divorce isn't finalized yet. I'm more than willing to see where this goes!"

Without another word, Yardley wrapped a long arm around her shoulders, pulling her tightly against him, and turned toward the door, leading her straight out into the corridor.

Back in the room, Melanie and Sylvia stared at each other in stunned silence.

Sylvia's manicured nails dug so hard into her palms they almost drew blood. With a furious scream, she threw off her blankets, fully intending to charge after them, but Melanie grabbed her hard by the shoulder.

"Why are you stopping me?!" Sylvia shrieked, borderline hysterical. "I can't just let him be with Veronica! He's... he's mine!"

Melanie smacked the back of her head, keeping her voice in a harsh whisper. "Are you entirely blind? He doesn't give a damn about Veronica. He's just using her as a prop to piss off Scarlett! Why are you panicking? Once he's divorced, he's yours. You're the one he actually cares about. Right now, you've got a free pawn willing to do the dirty work and clear Scarlett out of your way. Why aren't you thrilled?"
