Sylvia froze, processing the logic for a few seconds before her panic flared again. "But... what if he actually falls for Veronica while they're 'testing the chemistry'? Five years ago, we all swore he could never love Scarlett, and look at him now! He's practically losing his mind over her!"
Melanie patted her shoulder with total confidence. "Relax. It's obvious you're the true love of his life. He can't let you go. Once the divorce is finalized, you'll be the one left standing by his side."
"For now, we just sit back and watch how Veronica plays this. Word is, she's ruthless in the corporate world. If she can actually destroy Scarlett, you just get to reap the rewards without lifting a finger."
Hearing this, Sylvia's frantic heartbeat finally steadied.
Melanie had a point. Veronica had sounded terrifyingly competent when she was pitching her plan to ruin Scarlett's reputation. Sylvia had tried playing dirty in the shadows multiple times and failed miserably. Maybe letting this heiress take a swing was exactly what they needed.
Besides, Melanie was right. No one could replace Sylvia in Yardley’s heart. Even though he repeatedly told her to keep her distance, whenever she was in real trouble, his instinct was always to protect her. He had fully backed her when she rejoined the Schmidt family, giving her absolute credibility. And today, when the kidnappers put a gun to her head and forced him to choose, he hadn't hesitated to secure her safety.
No one could take her place. Feeling her confidence surge back, Sylvia nodded, a venomous smile spreading across her lips.
"You're right, Melanie. Yardley and I have a bond that goes back to childhood. No one can touch that. If Veronica wants to volunteer as tribute to take down Scarlett, let her try..."
Melanie smirked, sharing a conspiratorial smile with her. "Exactly."
Internally, however, Melanie rolled her eyes, silently cursing Sylvia for being such a monumental idiot.
After successfully pacifying the dim-witted heiress, Melanie couldn't wait any longer. She slipped out of the hospital room, eager to watch the drama unfold in the hallway.
...
Yardley dragged Veronica through the hospital corridors, pulling her all the way to a spot just outside Scarlett's room.
Veronica's heart was racing out of control; she felt like she had just ascended to heaven. She didn't even care where he was taking her. Her stomach fluttered with butterflies. Just the thought of him holding her hand, the anticipation of him kissing her—it sent a thrilling shiver down her spine. She kept stealing glances at his perfect profile.
Over the past five years, she had met countless men and gone on dozens of dates with the elite. But every single billionaire heir or tech genius fell short. They were either unattractive, too short, or deeply weird. Not a single one had ever caught her eye.
