Sylvia's words were like daggers aimed straight at Elara.
Elara stood tall, an air of unyielding grace about her. Her eyes were completely unfazed.
"I've already dealt with paternity testing facilities three times. I have no problem doing a fourth."
"I trust the son I raised. He would never toss aside his morals and involve himself in an affair!"
"And I trust Scarlett even more. She is absolutely not the kind of woman who lacks a moral compass!"
"But if..."
Elara paused, locking her sharp gaze onto Sylvia. Her voice dropped to a dangerous pitch. "If we prove that everything you just said is a baseless lie, and that Scarlett and Julian are completely innocent..."
"Then you, Sylvia, will hold a press conference and publicly apologize. And you will return every single wedding gift, every piece of gold, every baby present, and the fifty million dollar settlement you took from the Croft family."
"If you agree to that, Sylvia, I'll call the clinic right now and have Julian and the child's blood drawn right here!"
Sylvia's face went completely gray.
The socialites' jaws were virtually on the floor as they stared at Elara. No one had ever expected this usually calm, detached professor to wield such a lethal edge.
"Let me ask you this, Corinne! Scarlett was married into your family for five years. Did she get any wedding gifts? Did she get a wedding? Now you're publicly accusing her of having a child that isn't Yardley's. If the paternity test proves the baby is his, how much compensation is the Flynn family going to offer?!"
"We have the most respected women in Bay City right here! Let them be the judge! Please, answer my question, Corinne!"
Corinne's face turned the color of dirt. She stammered, "Why... why should I answer that? You can't compare Scarlett to Sylvia! Sylvia was groomed to be a top socialite by both the Stetsons and the Flynns! Scarlett is nothing compared to her!"
Jacqueline let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Ah, yes. A carefully groomed top socialite who ends up pulling off the most disgusting, shameless scandal imaginable! The Stetson and Flynn families really do have a phenomenal code of conduct!"
The crowd of wealthy women couldn't hold back their snickers, breaking out into mocking whispers.
