Scarlett was just about to scoff and accept the challenge, but before she could speak, a panicked figure lunged forward.
"Yardley! Forget it! There's no need for a test!"
Looking like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, Sylvia violently grabbed Yardley's arm. Her face was ashen, her nails digging into his suit jacket.
"Julian and I are already divorced! It's over! There's no reason to drag this out!"
"And as for Scarlett's daughter... since your test already proved she isn't yours, why go through the trouble? There's no point!"
Sylvia clung to him desperately, her eyes wide with terror, silently begging him to shut up.
She was terrified.
She was terrified that Yardley would actually call Julian over, and that this 'on-the-spot' blood test would become the execution ground for her web of lies.
If the results came out in front of everyone, proving that Scarlett's daughter was Yardley's, his disgust for Sylvia would become permanent.
She could never let him know the truth.
But Yardley was fixated. He frowned, pushing Sylvia's hand away with a cold look.
"What are you afraid of, Sylvia? If we're going to investigate, we're going to get to the bottom of it!"
"If Scarlett and Julian won't agree to the test, it proves they have something to hide!"
He turned back to Scarlett, pressing his attack. "Speak, Scarlett! Do you dare do the test?"
"I won't do it! Why should I?!" Sylvia completely lost her mind, screaming hysterically. "I absolutely refuse to do a paternity test! And I am never returning a single thing I got from the Crofts! Don't even think about it!"
A deadly silence swept through the hall.
"First, if the test proves that she is your daughter, I want your entire family—including your father—to hold a press conference and publicly apologize to me and Julian. Second, you will pay me double the compensation outlined in our divorce agreement. Can you do that?"
Yardley visibly flinched. His fingers curled instinctively as he stared blankly at Scarlett.
Seeing the absolute certainty and confidence blazing in her eyes, a massive wave of doubt crashed over him.
Could the child... actually be his?
Why else would Scarlett be so confident?
But if the child was his, then what was the deal with the test results he had seen?
Paralyzed by doubt, Yardley couldn't bring himself to agree. But suddenly, a loud, clear voice cut through the tension.
"Fine, I accept on his behalf!"
