"Kane? Is that you?" she hissed into the receiver, her voice trembling with urgency.
A gravelly, agitated voice barked back. "Yeah, it's me. Keep your voice down, you wanna get me killed? Look, someone finally managed to bail me out, but I can't stay in the country. If I stick around and the charges stick, my life is over."
Sylvia's chest tightened. "Then... where are you going? Back to Myanor?"
"Exactly! I'm taking our son and heading back to Myanor right now! Once I'm out of their jurisdiction, the local cops can't touch me. We'll lay low until this blows over. I'm asking you one last time—are you coming with me or not?"
Sylvia's heart pounded violently against her ribs.
If she were being honest, running away with a fugitive wasn't her first choice. Sure, being with him meant access to money and luxury, but it also meant living with a target on her back. She could end up dead at any moment.
But what was the alternative? Staying with Yardley? At best, he would let her keep this meaningless desk job. He couldn't offer her much else. Before Scarlett and Julian had shown up, she had still felt a lingering sense of superiority. But watching them bask in success while everyone tripped over themselves to praise Scarlett had shattered that illusion completely.
Right now, all she wanted was to see someone tear them down. She wanted them to suffer, to lose everything, to crash and burn in the worst way possible.
