"Besides," she continued, "you're remarried now too. We've both moved forward. Why cling to the past? I certainly don't operate that way. As for what's going on in your head, that's entirely your own problem."
Her words were crisp, open, and undeniably reasonable. Every employee listening nodded in silent agreement.
Yardley's expression turned thunderous. Just as he opened his mouth to retort, Julian finally spoke, his voice smooth and unhurried.
"The first thing an adult should learn is how to accept when things don't go their way, and how to respect other people's happiness. My wife is kindhearted. She wanted to share her joy with her former colleagues, and naturally, I support her. If you're too narrow-minded to handle that, that is a flaw in your own character. There's no need to lash out and insult my wife."
Julian's commanding presence instantly suffocated the space around them.
Hearing the words "my wife," Yardley's eyes darkened. His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white, the blood freezing in his veins.
It suddenly dawned on him that inviting her here today had been an act of spectacular self-humiliation. Not only had they shown up, but they had also used a perfectly polite gesture to deliver a stinging blow to his pride. And worst of all, he couldn't even formulate a valid argument against it.
He stared at the small gift box in her hand as if it were a dagger aimed at his heart. "Fine. If that's how it is, I have nothing more to say. But I'll pass on the favor. Let's stick to business."
Forcing down the boiling storm inside him, he gathered whatever dignity he had left. His tone turned icy and distant. "Let's go upstairs."
Scarlett gave a slight nod, her face impassive. "Lead the way."
