The overwhelming aura radiating from Scarlett was so intense it made the doctor visibly shudder.
Flustered, Dr. Fischer pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose. The grave expression on her face dissolved, instantly replaced by a warm, reassuring smile. "Fortunately, the bone marrow aspiration results just came back. Dawn is incredibly lucky. We didn't find any leukemia cells in her marrow."
Scarlett’s brow furrowed even deeper, her heart hammering as she pressed for answers. "And? What does that mean? Doctor, please, give it to me straight."
Dr. Fischer hurried to explain. "Looking at Dawn's recent medical history alongside these results, we can conclusively rule out leukemia. What she’s actually experiencing is a severe 'leukemoid reaction.'"
"Her bone marrow's blood-producing function is completely normal. The reason her numbers spiked to such alarming levels is because she contracted a severe viral infection, and her body is working in overdrive to fight it off. Simply put, it was a terrifying false alarm. Once we treat the underlying infection, she will make a full recovery."
As the doctor methodically laid out the diagnosis, Scarlett’s entire body began to tremble violently.
Her legs gave out, completely sapped of strength. Overwhelmed by a tidal wave of joy, relief, and post-adrenaline exhaustion, she could barely stand, unable to untangle whether she was ecstatic or simply hollowed out from the sheer terror of the past few days.
Julian immediately pulled up a nearby chair, gently guiding her down by the arms.
Scarlett frantically wiped at the fresh tears streaming down her face. The crushing boulder that had been sitting on her chest vanished, leaving her heart feeling weightless.
She reached out, gripping the doctor’s shoulders, her voice shaking. "So, what you’re saying is... my daughter doesn't have cancer. She’s going to be okay?"
Dr. Fischer flinched slightly at the sudden contact but nodded enthusiastically. "While she isn't perfectly healthy just yet and will need continued treatment for the infection, it is absolutely nowhere near as severe as leukemia. You can breathe easy. This is completely curable."
Right at that moment, frantic knocking echoed from the office door before it was thrown open by Mr. Shaw.
Completely oblivious to the fact that Scarlett and Julian were inside, he burst into the room and shouted, "Dr. Fischer! You said Veronica Thorne wants to pull Dawn's medical records? What on earth is she playing at? Listen to me, whatever you do, do *not*—"
His words died in his throat as his gaze suddenly collided with two piercing, icy stares.
Beads of cold sweat instantly broke out across Mr. Shaw's face. He gave a violent shudder, his hand rising in a stiff, mechanical wave. "Oh, what a coincidence... you two are in Dr. Fischer's office. Nice to see you again."
Julian's voice was deathly calm, but it carried an unmistakable, razor-sharp edge. "Did you just say Veronica Thorne is trying to pull Dawn's medical records? Did you already give them to her?"
