“Scarlett! You will never guess what I just found out!”
Amused by her best friend’s dramatic tone, Scarlett chuckled. “Talia, don't keep me in suspense. What is it?”
“Veronica Thorne has been hanging around Bay City a lot lately,” Talia revealed, her voice dropping conspiratorially. “And she’s been getting real cozy with Melanie Flynn and Sylvia Stetson! But here’s the kicker—she’s always had her sights set on Yardley. She is absolutely obsessed with him!”
Talia paused, her tone turning dead serious. “If she’s suddenly trying to pull Dawn’s medical records, I’d bet money they’re all in cahoots. Veronica is incredibly ambitious and dangerously calculating. She is not someone to take lightly, Scarlett. You have to be careful.”
Scarlett’s grip on her phone tightened as the pieces fell into place. “Got it. I'll keep my guard up.”
“By the way, how is Dawn?” Talia asked, her voice softening. “I’m going to drive down to Sutton City to see you guys right after work. I miss her so much, and I miss you too.”
At the mention of her daughter, the heavy clouds in Scarlett’s eyes cleared, and her voice lifted. “I actually have some great news. Dawn is going to be fine. It was just a severe leukemoid reaction, not actual leukemia. Just a massive false alarm.”
She hesitated for a second before adding, “But please, keep this between us for now. Don't breathe a word of it to anyone.”
Talia let out an understanding chuckle. “Say no more! You’re worried the Flynn family is going to try and use her condition against you, aren't you?”
Scarlett let out a cold laugh. “They took a massive hit at that charity gala. Corinne and Gwen are still locked up, and the entire Flynn family’s reputation is in the gutter right now. There's no way they're just going to let that go. Now that they think my daughter is sick, they’re starting to pull all these dirty little stunts, which means they're definitely plotting something bigger.”
A rush of warmth flooded Scarlett’s chest, the sting of tears prickling the backs of her eyes. “Thank you... I'm so lucky to have friends like you.”
“Damn right you are!” Talia said, her voice bursting with fierce pride. “Just remember, no matter what goes down, I am unconditionally on your side. I might not be able to fix everything, but I am always, always going to be in your corner.”
“I know,” Scarlett whispered, her heart overflowing. “And I'll always be in yours. We’re in this together, always and forever.”
“Always!” Talia affirmed before ending the call.
Lowering the phone, Scarlett stared at the darkened screen, a few stray tears finally slipping down her cheeks.
