He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 500

She couldn't hold back a bitter scoff. "What's this? Is the great Mr. Flynn planning to play the white knight and turn on his own family?"

The sarcasm was biting, and Yardley caught every ounce of it.

He knew how this looked. The moment he bailed out his mother and aunt, Scarlett's mother was taken away by the police in cuffs. Anyone would suspect a connection. Not to mention, Scarlett's resentment and disgust toward him had already reached a boiling point. Still... the second he heard her mother was in trouble, he had rushed over, desperate to see if there was any way he could help. He knew she no longer needed him. Yet, he couldn't stop himself from wanting to do something—anything—for her.

"You can look at it that way," he replied quietly.

Scarlett let out another cold laugh. Her fingers curled into tight fists, nails digging into her palms as she took a deep, shaky breath. She didn't buy for a second that her mother's sudden arrest and Corinne's miraculous release were a mere coincidence. There had to be a connection.

So who exactly was Yardley putting on this hypocritical, self-righteous act for? When she had practically begged for his affection in the past, he had treated her like she was invisible. Now that she had completely scrubbed him from her heart and mind, he suddenly wanted to play the role of the devoted lover. He was acting like the tragic hero who would love her unconditionally, no matter how much she pushed him away.

But affection delivered too late was like a lavish feast left out to rot. No matter how valuable it once was, now it was just a rancid, stomach-turning mess.

Scarlett didn't have the patience to entertain his delusions. She cut straight to the chase. "Yardley, the raid on La Belle Nuit. Was that you? Or your family?"
