Meanwhile, on the other side of town.
The very first thing Yardley did upon returning home was look for Melanie and Sylvia. When he finally got them on the phone, he discovered they were throwing a wild bash at Sylvia's new place.
The deafening bass of party music bled through the speaker, making Yardley frown in deep disapproval. "Why are you throwing a party out of nowhere? What exactly is there to celebrate?"
Melanie sounded ecstatic on the other end. "Yardley, have you seen the news? La Belle Nuit just got raided! That old witch and a dozen of her employees were hauled off! The whole place is shut down!"
"Mom and Aunt Corinne just got released, and Jacqueline goes straight behind bars! It's poetic justice! Of course we have to celebrate!"
"You need to get over here!" she practically shrieked over the music. "You've been miserable lately. Come blow off some steam! Oh, and your boys Gordon and Harbour are here too!"
Yardley had been about to unleash a furious lecture, disgusted that they were reveling in Scarlett's misery. But hearing that Gordon and Harbour were there made him pause. His expression shifted. "Fine. Tell them to wait for me."
This was Sylvia's first time hosting an exclusive gathering since her divorce and her high-profile return to the wealthy Schmidt family. Eager to rapidly build connections with the city's upper crust, she had mandated a strict 'swimsuit and mask' dress code. She pitched it as a fun icebreaker to help everyone let loose, ensuring even the more reserved socialites felt comfortable letting their hair down behind the anonymity of a mask.
When Yardley arrived and a waiter smoothly handed him a pair of swim trunks and a mask, his face turned completely black.
Melanie hadn't mentioned a word about a pool party. He never expected Sylvia to pull something this outrageous. Stiffening, Yardley turned on his heel to leave. But before he could escape, two women—one in a sultry black one-piece and a white peacock mask, the other in a bright yellow bikini and an owl mask—ran up, hooked their arms through his, and dragged him inside.
