Scarlett practically sprinted to her car and threw herself inside.
The second the door slammed shut, the dam broke. She tipped her head back, gasping for air.
Outside the window, the sun beat down with blinding intensity, casting harsh rays across her face.
Her mind was a chaotic blur, her lungs burning with a suffocating heaviness... She despised feeling this way.
She dug her nails into her palms, desperately fighting back the emotional hijack.
She had sworn a blood oath to herself: she would never waste another second of her life shedding tears for Yardley Flynn.
Taking several deep, shuddering breaths, she finally managed to wrestle her heart rate down. Just as the storm in her chest began to settle, a gentle knock rapped against the glass.
Scarlett opened her eyes. Through the blurred window, she met a pair of warm, familiar eyes.
A second later, the passenger door swung open. Julian Croft slid into the seat, bringing with him the faint, clean scent of pine and fresh sunlight.
"Are you alright? Sorry, I got cornered by some clients. By the time I managed to break away and look for you, I just saw you bolting out the door."
Julian's gaze softened as it landed on her pale face, an undeniable flicker of heartache passing through his eyes.
A bitter, hollow smile pulled at Scarlett's lips.
"Do you want to know what Yardley just told me?"
Julian kept his voice gentle, treading carefully. "What did he say?"
Scarlett's eyes were dark and fragmented.
"He told me his personal assets are currently sitting at negative two billion. That's why he has to lock down this deal with Thorne Industries at all costs."
Julian's brow furrowed instantly.
"That's impossible. Unless... he planned for this ages ago and rigged his own financials."
Scarlett let out a cynical chuckle.
"It just proves that to him, I've always been collateral damage. From day one, he's been guarding his vault. Him, his family—they're all exactly the same."
"But the real joke is how perfectly he played the devoted, loving husband all these years."
