He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 72

Corinne frantically stepped in his way.

"Yardley, why are you yelling at her? She's heartbroken! Julian bought into those petty rumors and has been giving her the cold shoulder since he got back. He didn't even show up when she was in the hospital for two days."

"Look at what your wife has done! Is that any way for a decent person to behave? If Scarlett hadn't been stirring the pot and spreading lies, would Sylvia and Julian's relationship have fallen apart like this?"

"Sylvia is so devastated she doesn't even want to live anymore. Caleb is still so young—what will happen to the poor child if something happens to her? Yardley, you have to talk her down. She listens to you. Hurry!"

Corinne's eyes were brimming with tears, her face a portrait of sheer panic.

Yardley shot her a glacial stare. His mind immediately flashed to what Scarlett had told him—the horrifying words Corinne had spoken outside the delivery room.

He couldn't hold back a bitter, mocking retort.

"Sylvia threatens to end it all, and suddenly you're worried sick about Caleb. Funny how I never saw you show an ounce of that concern for your own flesh-and-blood granddaughter."

Corinne was utterly speechless.

Why on earth was he bringing that up now, when a life was on the line?

She shot him a desperate look.

"Why... why are you bringing up unpleasant things at a time like this? Just get Sylvia down from there, please!"

Yardley's gaze darkened as he looked at his mother with freezing disdain.

"So, my biological daughter is just an 'unpleasant thing' to you?"

"What kind of grandmother are you?"

Corinne flushed with anger. "Yardley, you..."

"If Sylvia wants to jump, the person responsible is her husband, not me. You should be calling Julian, not dragging me here."

"Mom, I'm going to be blunt with you. You need to get your priorities straight. What kind of person completely ignores her own granddaughter to go play doting grandmother to another family's child?"
