He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 73

Yardley pinched the bridge of his nose in sheer frustration. Just as he stepped forward, Sylvia deliberately let go with one hand and leaned further out.

His heart leaped into his throat. Terrified, he froze in his tracks and forced his voice to be as gentle as possible.

"Alright, I promise you. Just come down, it's far too dangerous up there!"

Yardley closed the distance in one massive stride, snatching Sylvia's hand while his other arm firmly encircled her waist.

Sylvia immediately went limp, collapsing against his chest.

In the split second he pulled her away from the window, a fleeting, unmistakable gleam of triumph flashed across her eyes.

Yardley carried her straight to the sofa and grabbed a nearby blanket, tightly wrapping her shivering body as she sat there with a red, sniffling nose.

Corinne rushed over with a warm drink.

"Sylvia, be a good girl and have some of this to warm up. Please, you can't ever do something this foolish again."

"Even if your parents and your husband's family are cold to you, you still have me and Yardley. Plus, look at Caleb! He's so healthy and adorable. How could you bear to leave him?"

Sylvia took the mug and obediently took a few sips. She looked up, her eyes red and swimming with tears. "I couldn't bear to leave you or Yardley. And I definitely couldn't leave Caleb. But... but it hurts so much. If Scarlett refuses to publicly clarify that there's nothing going on between Yardley and me... my reputation is completely destroyed!"

Sylvia clutched Yardley's sleeve, pouting pitifully.

"Yardley, will you please talk to Scarlett? The only way to fix this is for her to tell the public that we just have a platonic bond and nothing else."

"If this continues, I don't know what Julian or the Croft family will do to me. I... I might as well just be dead!"
