He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 761

Meanwhile, Zachary shot Julian a playful but warning glare, silently urging him not to drop the ball.

Scarlett looked at her brother, taking in his resolute expression. He had effectively bulldozed all her escape routes, practically screaming, 'You're getting married whether you like it or not.' She took a deep breath. Turning her gaze to Julian, she found the man looking at her with a devotion and intense anticipation that he couldn't quite mask.

Everything seemed logical on the surface, but looking closer, it felt bizarrely orchestrated. Scarlett's mind raced, and she narrowed her eyes, her tone sharp with scrutiny. "Julian, tell me the truth. Was this your idea, or my brother's?"

Nothing ever slipped past her. Julian met her gaze openly. "We happened to be on the exact same page. We thought of it together."

He paused, lowering his voice to add, "Your brother will only have peace of mind if he leaves you in my care."

Zachary chimed in, "This is a win-win for everyone involved. We become a united front, and nobody loses out."

Scarlett was momentarily speechless. Now she saw the picture clearly. These two had been playing good cop, bad cop all along, holding a fully written script and just waiting for her to say her lines.

Her lips curved into a faint smile. "Let me think about it first. But since this would be a contract marriage, shouldn't there be a written agreement?"

Julian heard the opening and caught the glimmer of hope. A microscopic smile touched his lips. "That's easy. Once we're back in Country H, I'll have Chatwin Wyatt draft the contract. Whatever terms or demands you have, just put them all on the table. Trust me, I'd rather take the loss myself than ever let you get the short end of the stick."

Zachary shot him a dark look. "If my sister suffers even a little, I'll have your head."

Julian chuckled. "You have my word. A hundred times over."

"Julian, no wonder I felt like you were acting strange these past few days. So, you and my brother had this ulterior motive all along."

Julian pressed his lips together, his voice dropping an octave as he looked at her. "Scarlett, it's not entirely because of the audit. The main reason is... my grandmother is very sick. I want to fulfill her final wish before she passes."

The sudden news hit Scarlett like a physical blow. "Professor Dawson?" She practically launched herself out of her chair. "What happened? What kind of illness? How could she be sick?"

She couldn't believe it. The Madeleine Dawson in her memories was always fiercely energetic, crisp, and full of life. It made no sense that she was suddenly ill. When they last saw each other, she had looked perfectly fine.

"It's likely due to her years of work in historical building preservation. She inhaled too many toxic substances."
