The veins at Yardley’s temples throbbed as he gritted his teeth, forcing out her name. "...Scarlett."
His chest heaved. He couldn't figure out why, every time he tried to seize control of the narrative, she somehow had him cornered.
But looking at Julian’s unconscious form, and weighing her warning, he realized he truly couldn't just dump the man on the floor right now.
It wasn't that he was afraid of Julian’s influence in the architectural world.
It was that if he walked away, the responsibility of caring for him would fall right back onto Scarlett.
And as a man, he knew better than anyone that these were the most dangerous moments—the moments when it was easiest to take advantage of someone.
"Fine. You win," he breathed, bracing himself.
With a hard clench of his jaw, his arms flexed, heaving Julian's dead weight onto his back. He marched out of the elevator and strode down the hall toward Julian's room.
Watching the spectacle, Scarlett's lips curved into an amused smile. She was just about to follow when Veronica's sarcastic, mocking voice drifted over.
"Well, I never expected you to be so manipulative. Playing both Julian Croft and Yardley Flynn like fiddles."
Scarlett turned and gave her a flat look. "Still doing better than you."
Veronica choked, her face turning an ugly shade of purple. "You..."
Ignoring her, Scarlett quickened her pace to catch up to the men. Reaching into Julian’s pocket, she fished out his room key and swiped it against the sensor.
As soon as Yardley hauled him inside, she swiftly shut the door—locking Veronica out and completely disregarding the furious stomping and muffled shrieks coming from the hallway.
Panting, Yardley dumped his rival onto the massive bed.
The moment Julian hit the mattress, he sank into the plush covers, stretching his long legs out and settling in comfortably.
Out of habit, Scarlett stepped forward to take off his shoes.
Intensely irritated by her proactive behavior, Yardley reached out, hooked an arm around her waist, and pulled her behind him.
Because if Julian casually pulled her into his arms while she was leaning over him... he didn't even want to picture it.
After all, that was exactly how he and Scarlett had ended up together all those years ago.
He knew better than anyone what Julian’s true intentions were right now.
Scarlett took a deep breath, her brows drawing together. "Take advantage of what? Look at the state of him. What could he possibly do?"
"You're being completely paranoid."
Yardley let out a cold scoff.
"He's faking it. If a man is truly blacked out, he's physically incapable of doing anything of the sort."
"If you don't believe me, I'll prove it to you right now!"
With a dark, piercing glare, he turned back to the bed.
