The air between them practically crackled with electricity. It wasn't just his gaze; Julian’s entire presence radiated a magnetic, overwhelming sexual tension.
Scarlett’s heart fluttered frantically against her ribs. A tingling sensation swept through her body, and a fierce blush ignited on her cheeks.
All the rational, carefully constructed arguments she had planned to deliver evaporated into thin air. Under his devastating assault, she was instantly reduced to a flustered, lovestruck mess.
The current raced through her veins. Her pulse pounded furiously, her skin burning hot.
She had spent six years with Yardley, but she had never, not even once, felt a physical reaction this visceral.
Julian’s voice seemed to cast a spell over her, every breath he took thick with intoxicating allure. She was entirely powerless to resist, feeling herself slipping deeper and deeper under his control.
His nose lightly brushed against hers. His breath grazed the sensitive skin of her neck.
Even though he was whispering right into her ear, his voice felt like an ethereal echo, vibrating with a mesmerizing power.
He said, "Follow your heart, Scarlett."
"If any other man in the world tried to pursue you, you’d have every right to be terrified. You’d have every right to run away. But with me... you don't need to fear anything. I promise you, I will make you feel perfectly safe."
And then, just as suddenly as he had closed in, Julian stood up and abruptly strode out of the study.
One second, Scarlett felt like she was being consumed by a blazing inferno, and the next, the heat was completely ripped away. The man who had just short-circuited her entire nervous system had vanished like a ghost.
Scarlett remained frozen in her chair, her body feeling completely limp. She instinctively reached up to touch her flushed cheeks.
It was ridiculous. They hadn't even kissed, yet she felt completely drained, as if he had sucked all the oxygen from her lungs. She bit her lower lip, shaking her head in sheer frustration.
