And Julian was the man who, without ever saying too much, had persistently planted those seeds in her heart.
"Scarlett."
Julian walked out of the kitchen having finished the dishes.
The moment he untied his apron, he was instantly back to looking like the breathtaking, undeniably masculine Adonis he was.
Seeing Dawn fast asleep in Scarlett's arms, he deliberately softened his footsteps, walking over to her side and gazing tenderly at the little girl's face.
"Look at her. She feels so safe sleeping in your arms."
"But you're going to get tired holding her like that. I'll take her up to her crib."
Without waiting for her to respond, Julian bent down and carefully scooped Dawn out of her embrace.
Dawn squirmed a little, but Julian gently rocked her, and she settled right back into a deep sleep.
He carried her toward the nursery. After gently placing her in the crib, he tiptoed back out.
By the time he returned to the living room, Scarlett was holding her phone, listening to a voice memo from Talia.
Talia genuinely believed Scarlett and Julian had died in Country A. Unable to process the devastating news, she had been relentlessly sending messages to Scarlett's social media accounts.
Sometimes they were texts, sometimes tearful voice memos, all overflowing with how much she missed her.
Hearing Talia break down in tears time and time again left Scarlett feeling incredibly touched but also heartbroken. She desperately wanted to reply but was terrified of blowing their cover. It tore her up inside.
Noticing her red-rimmed eyes, Julian walked over and lightly tapped her nose.
"Feeling guilty seeing Talia this upset?"
Scarlett snapped out of it, looking up at him with misty eyes.
