Seeing Yardley slumped on the floor, looking completely devastated, Sylvia gently set the food container on the coffee table. Her brow furrowed in concern.

"Yardley, you can't keep doing this to yourself. You have to pull yourself together."

"Look at me—Julian is dead too, but I'm not shedding any tears over him, even though I used to love him."

"You guys were already divorced. She wasn't your wife anymore. Why are you torturing yourself like this?"

Yardley pressed a hand hard against his chest. The dull ache there refused to fade.

Dragging his heavy legs, he slowly pushed himself off the floor and onto the sofa. His normally healthy complexion looked sallow, his lips pale. The look he gave Sylvia was agonizingly bleak.

"You don't understand. What I felt for Scarlett isn't the same as what you felt for Julian."

"Ha!"

Sylvia let out a cold scoff. "Yardley, what's the difference? The reason I married Julian, and the reason you married Scarlett, both started because we accidentally ended up in bed together."

"You didn't have some epic foundation of love, and neither did Julian and I. You didn't even care about her back then. Can you at least admit that?"

A sudden flare of anger ignited in Yardley's chest. He instinctively recoiled at the idea of his devotion being questioned.

He wanted to argue back, but then he realized he had nothing to say. Because Sylvia was right.

"Fine. I didn't care about her before."

Yardley's Adam's apple bobbed heavily, his voice coming out raw and gravelly. "But I never wanted a divorce. And I never, ever thought that someone who loved me that much would actually leave me."
