Unlike Corinne and Melanie, Catherine clearly had a heart. She immediately reached out her arms toward Dawn, her voice choking on a sob. "You poor darling. Losing your mother so young... come here, sweetie. Let Auntie hold you."
Dawn hesitated for a moment, burying her face in Jacqueline's shoulder, but eventually opened her little arms and leaned into Catherine's embrace.
Holding her niece, Catherine's tears spilled over, and she wept openly.
Seeing her raw grief, Talia and Jacqueline both felt their own eyes stinging.
Standing to the side, Yardley looked at his tiny daughter. The agonizing reality that Scarlett was gone forever hit him again, and his eyes reddened.
"We can't bring her back. We have to stay strong," Yardley said, his voice thick with emotion.
Jacqueline quickly reined in her feelings. As the only person in the room who knew her daughter was perfectly safe, she wasn't exactly devastated.
She had only teared up because it broke her heart that, out of the entire Flynn family, Catherine was the only one who showed the child an ounce of genuine love.
"Tell me about this memorial. What exactly are you proposing?" Jacqueline asked, her tone entirely devoid of warmth. She had zero remaining goodwill for her former son-in-law.
Yardley stood respectfully, keeping his hands at his sides.
"I had my team draw up a preliminary plan. It outlines the logistics and the different departments involved. You can review it, and whatever changes you want, we'll make."
