With those words, Scarlett closed her eyes in sheer devotion.
Her arms wrapped around Julian's waist, her hands trailing over him in a deliberately provocative dance.
Just as her fingers were about to venture into the deepest, most uncharted territory of masculine mystery, a large hand clamped down over hers.
Immediately after, a low, husky voice drifted down from above.
"Scarlett. Wait."
She opened her eyes in bewilderment, meeting Julian's deep, affectionate gaze.
He looked down at her, his voice uncharacteristically rough. "I can't."
Now it was Scarlett's turn to be floored.
As a grown woman, making the first move like this had already taken an enormous amount of courage. Crossing this physical boundary was a massive step for her.
Yet Julian, a red-blooded man in the prime of his life, was actually telling her to wait? Telling her *no*?
What was going through his head?
They had spent so much time together, and she had felt his physical response on more than one occasion. He clearly wanted her. But now, after she had practically given him a neon green light, he was hitting the brakes.
Could Elara's words actually be true?
Was he... actually impotent?
Caught completely off guard by the thought, the question tumbled out of her mouth before she could stop it. "Why not?"
Julian took a sharp breath, fighting to keep his heart from hammering right out of his chest.
He had to admit, her sudden boldness had nearly driven him out of his mind. This was the first time in the year they had known each other that they were intimately, truly sharing a bed.
He was panicking a little. The rush of blood to his head was intoxicating, making him feel dangerously out of control.
