The most recent blow had been the most fatal. Her adoptive mother had tricked her into dumping her last ten million in savings into an underground lottery scheme. She had lost every single dime. Not only was her money gone, but she was now staring down the barrel of a ten-million-dollar gambling debt.
Her entire world had collapsed.
She had even resigned herself to crawling back to Kane. As long as he paid off her debts, she'd just marry him and be done with it. She had accepted her fate. Maybe she was only meant to end up with a scumbag like him.
But right when she needed him most, Kane's phone had been unreachable for days. Desperate, she tried calling his subordinates, only to find their numbers were disconnected too.
With her reality spiraling into chaos, Sylvia locked herself in the villa to drink the pain away. In a drunken, hazy stupor, she had scrolled through her social media feed—and that was when she saw the videos of Julian and Scarlett's engagement celebration.
They had been posted by a distant relative of the Croft family. After her divorce, Sylvia hadn't bothered to delete all of her former in-laws. Most of them had blocked her, but this one person hadn't—likely just an oversight.
The relative had uploaded a barrage of videos from the party. Sylvia stared at the familiar faces, at the radiant, overjoyed smiles on Julian and Scarlett's faces, and listened to Dominic Croft heap endless praise upon his future daughter-in-law. With every second that played, Sylvia felt as though she were being slapped across the face, her cheeks burning with humiliation.
Everything Scarlett had now was the happiness that had once been right at Sylvia's fingertips.
