Corinne's face turned a livid shade, her voice rising to a shrill pitch. "What do you mean by that? What do you mean Sylvia dragged the Flynn family's dignity through the mud? Scarlett was the one who did that!"
"How dare you, Clarissa! You're actually turning against your own family, choosing to defend an outsider over your own cousin!"
Clarissa stood with her hands in her pockets, her aura chilling. Approaching five foot seven, she exuded a powerful, predatory presence as she glared down at Corinne.
Her sheer dominance completely overpowered the older woman, choking the words right out of Corinne's throat.
"It's exactly this attitude of treating Scarlett like an outsider that pushed her to this point!" Clarissa snapped.
"You keep insisting Sylvia did nothing wrong and that Scarlett is entirely to blame. So tell me, what exactly was Scarlett's crime? Was it giving the Flynn family a child? Was it working herself to the bone for this family three hundred and sixty-five days a year? Or was it being too obedient when you constantly made up ridiculous rules to punish her?"
Corinne was struck completely speechless.
It took several agonizing seconds for her to recover. She glared at Clarissa, her expression sour. "What has gotten into you?"
"Didn't you used to hate Scarlett? Didn't you think she wasn't good enough for Yardley? Why are you suddenly bending over backward to defend her?"
Clarissa shot her mother an icy sideways glance.
"I never hated Scarlett. I simply believed Yardley wasn't cut out for marriage. And look at them now—it blew up exactly like I expected."
Corinne bristled at those words, practically jumping out of her skin.
"Don't talk nonsense! Hasn't your brother treated Scarlett well enough? He's talked back to me countless times just to defend her! It's that woman who doesn't appreciate what she has. She's completely reckless and selfish, and it has absolutely nothing to do with your brother!"
Clarissa let out a dry, exasperated scoff.
"With an attitude like yours, if I were in her shoes, I would have caused a much bigger scene!"
"When she was in labor and the doctors asked who to prioritize if things went wrong, you told them if it was a boy, save the child, but if it was a girl, let them both die. Mom, is that true?"
Corinne's face stiffened in sheer panic. She instinctively scrambled to deny it.
"Who... who told you that? I never said any such thing!"
