There was absolutely nothing they could do but pace the hallway.
Helena stood rigidly by the door, entirely silent.
Julian looked down at her. "Lena, you always knew this day would come, didn't you? Secrets like this always find a way out eventually."
He laid out the harsh reality without sugarcoating it.
She just kept staring at the floor.
"She was going to find out sooner or later. You couldn't hide her true parentage forever. She's far too smart; she would have figured it out herself in a few years."
"So since the bomb has already dropped, we just have to deal with the fallout. We'll figure this out."
He was desperately trying to stop her from spiraling into another panic attack.
"The most important thing is that her heart is fine. The therapist will handle the emotional trauma."
"You survived this exact same darkness. You know better than anyone that she has to process this on her own terms. And she's a brilliant kid; she won't let this destroy her."
He spoke with a steady, reassuring rhythm.
But his comforting logic barely scratched the surface of her crushing guilt.
Eventually realizing words were useless, he sighed and fell silent.
He just leaned against the wall, keeping a close eye on her.
It took an agonizing hour for her heart rate to finally steady into a normal rhythm.
Finally, the door clicked open, and the therapist stepped out.
Helena immediately lunged forward.
"How is she?!" she demanded breathlessly.
The therapist gave her a somber look. "The sheer shock of the revelation completely overwhelmed her. Her brain simply cannot process the fact that the two people she loves most supposedly threw her away. It's going to take a substantial amount of time and therapy for her to unravel this trauma. Her current silence is a defense mechanism. Do not force her to speak. When she is ready to vocalize her pain, she will."
"She is only six years old. You cannot expect a child to comprehend the horrifying complexities of adult decisions. Her reaction is entirely standard for a trauma of this magnitude."
He gave a clinical but compassionate summary of the devastation inside that room.
