Ignoring the icy reception, he crouched down so he was eye-level with the little girl.
"I am so incredibly sorry," he rasped. "But you have to blame me for this, not your mother. Everything that happened, all this pain, is entirely my fault."
"She never threw you away. She loves you more than life itself. She fought like hell to protect you. It was my utter arrogance, my refusal to believe her, that almost got you killed."
"The Campbell family took you away and poured millions into saving your life. After what I did, they obviously refused to let me near you."
"Your mother was trapped in a coma for years. Claire was the only one capable of raising you, so the family buried your true identity to keep you safe."
"The absolute second she woke up and realized you were alive, she rushed straight to Coralia to find you."
"She didn't tell you the truth because her mind was still incredibly fragile. Our relationship was a toxic battlefield, and she was terrified the crossfire would destroy you."
"When I finally found out, I wanted to bring you home instantly. She fought me on it, knowing that dragging you back into the ruthless politics of the Hayes family would paint a massive target on your back."
"Those are the reasons we kept you in the dark. It was never because we didn't want you."
He laid out the agonizing truth with absolute clarity.
She was a brilliant, highly perceptive child; she understood the logic behind the tragedy perfectly.
He wasn't trying to win her affection; he just wanted to eradicate the toxic lie his mother had planted in her head.
He had to make sure she knew she was fiercely loved.
"I'm moving back to Riverton tonight. If you ever want to see me, you have my number. You can call me anytime, day or night."
"And please keep in touch with Kyle. You two are half-siblings, and he absolutely adores you."
"But if you want absolutely nothing to do with us, I won't force you."
"Just remember this—all we want is for you to be happy and healthy. If you are safe, your mother can finally find some peace, and so can I," he finished softly.
The little girl remained entirely mute.
He didn't push for a response.
With a heavy sigh, he stood up and walked toward the door.
He knew it would take her months, maybe years, to process the sheer weight of this confession.
Trying to pry forgiveness out of a traumatized six-year-old was incredibly selfish and completely pointless.
As he grabbed the door handle, her eyes quietly tracked his retreating figure.
