Skye seemed to register her presence, glancing at her for a fleeting second before her blank gaze returned to the wall, entirely wordless.
But crucially, she didn't violently flinch away this time.
Taking that as permission, Helena finally stepped closer to the bed.
"Don't overthink things, baby. I'm right here," she murmured softly.
"No matter what title we use, or what complicated mess this is, I am never leaving your side."
"If you want to stay in the Capital with me, we'll stay right here."
"I never threw you away. I swear to you, I just thought you would be so much safer and happier with the Campbell family than you ever could be with me."
"Because my mind was completely broken, and I was trapped in a toxic nightmare. I couldn't even keep myself alive, let alone protect you."
She spoke with brutal honesty, carefully avoiding the gruesome details of the past, but making sure the child understood how utterly powerless she had been.
"I never planned on keeping this a secret from you forever."
"But your heart was so fragile. You still have one more massive surgery when you turn twelve. I just wanted you to get strong and healthy before I dropped this on you. I was terrified the shock would kill you."
"The fact that you had to find out from that monster... I am so incredibly sorry."
She delivered a desperate, soul-crushing apology.
But she made one thing absolutely clear: they were staying together in the Capital from now on.
Skye just lay there, perfectly still. It was completely impossible to tell if she had processed a single word.
Helena didn't push for a reaction.
She gently brushed the hair away from the girl's forehead. Skye didn't pull away.
That tiny victory allowed a fraction of the tension to drain from Helena's shoulders.
She pulled up a chair and stayed right beside the bed.
A heavy, absolute silence settled over the room.
Neither of them uttered another sound.
The sun dipped below the horizon, plunging the city into darkness.
She never moved from her spot.
When dinner arrived, she carefully plated the food.
Skye didn't throw a fit or refuse to eat.
She just chewed mechanically, barely finishing a quarter of the meal.
But for Helena, that was a massive win.
At the very least, she wasn't rejecting her entirely.
