She looked up at him as he stood, towering over her with a commanding presence.
"What? Did you think a moment of gentleness meant I was having a change of heart?" His voice was instantly laced with cruelty.
The color drained from her face, the words she had been about to speak dying on her lips.
God, she was such a fool.
"Don't flatter yourself, and don't push my boundaries. You can't afford the consequences," he warned, his eyes locking onto hers.
"Seeing you pregnant just reminded me of Janetta. Don't think for a second that just because you chased her out of Riverton, you can do whatever you please," he sneered mercilessly.
He had absolutely no intention of letting her off the hook.
He was determined to drag her straight to hell.
"Never doubt what I say," he continued, his expression devoid of any warmth. "You know very well I always follow through. So, behave yourself next time, or I won't guarantee what I might do."
The bloody implication behind his words made her pale even further.
She remembered his threat to cut the baby out of her, and she thought of the tragic state Wynn was currently in.
She genuinely believed he was capable of following through.
So, she didn't argue back. She didn't say a single word.
He didn't linger either, turning on his heel and striding out of the master bedroom.
It wasn't until the door clicked shut that she finally collapsed against the mattress, drenched in a cold sweat.
The baby, for its part, remained completely still.
Whether out of fear or something else, she couldn't tell.
She rubbed her belly for a long time before the baby finally gave a soft flutter in response.
"Mommy won't let anything happen to you," she whispered, her voice laced with an ironclad resolve.
The bedroom was dead silent.
From outside, the roar of a car engine broke through the stillness.
She turned her head, peering through the gap in the curtains toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.
He was leaving.
She felt surprisingly numb.
When Janetta was in Riverton, she couldn't keep him around.
