Lachlan chuckled. "You're surprisingly funny. I'm not terminating your contract. I failed to manage the room properly tonight, but I swear it won't happen again. The Fordhams are dangerous, yes, but they don't own the entire sky. If I say I can revive your career, I will. I'm your boss now; you need to trust me."
"Then I'll eagerly await your good news, Mr. Schmidt."
She refused to move into the luxury apartment he provided, returning to her own modest rental instead.
As she stepped out of the car, Lachlan asked, "You don't actually have a fiancé lined up, do you?"
"Why do you ask?"
"If you do, tell me in advance. I don't want paparazzi catching you off guard and leaving us scrambling for a PR fix."
She just smiled and headed upstairs.
Sitting in the driver's seat, Lachlan lit a cigarette and dialed Hayden.
"That was a sloppy stunt tonight," he said bluntly.
"Was it?" Hayden's tone was ice-cold, a stark contrast to his usual charming public persona.
"If you have a grudge, take it up directly with Yorath. Humiliating a woman just makes me despise you."
Lachlan hung up before the actor could respond.
Ottilie's early departure left the orchestrators of the night's 'entertainment' severely disappointed.
A heavily intoxicated Huxley was cursing up a storm in the lounge.
"That dinosaur can't even get it up anymore! Acting like an animal in heat in public. I'm going to kill him."
Heath took a slow sip of his drink. "You're not killing anyone. Just wait. The real show is about to start."
"What show?" Huxley sobered up slightly.
Heath just smirked cryptically.
Huxley swore again.
There was nothing he hated more than young heirs trying to act mysterious and profound.
Half a month drifted by in perfect tranquility.
Lachlan's proposed film with Hayden somehow passed the censorship board without a hitch.
With the superstar attached, funding flooded in. Production kicked off.
Right in the middle of the cast's opening ceremony, the police arrived and arrested Ottilie in front of everyone.
"Ms. Sewell, we received a report alleging your involvement in dual contracts and corporate fraud."
She had written that in herself.
When she first signed, Jevon had deliberately goaded her.
He had mocked her, saying that once Yorath made her rich and famous, she would just sprout wings and abandon him.
Eager to prove her undying loyalty, she had sworn she would rather die than leave Yorath.
Her life belonged to him, so what did a mere contract matter?
She had recklessly tacked a string of zeros onto the two-million penalty.
Youthful arrogance was a deadly poison.
Lachlan stared at her for a long moment, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel.
"You handled this horribly, Ottilie."
That evening, Soren appeared at her apartment door.
The consummate legal assistant remained ruthlessly polite as he laid the documents out on her table, one by one.
"Ms. Sewell, this is the contract you signed with Mr. Fordham eight years ago. You have actively breached two core stipulations. First, you must remain his exclusive partner for the duration of the agreement. Second, unless he formally initiates termination, any contract you sign with a third party is instantly rendered null and void. That includes your recent agreement with Mr. Schmidt."
