Midnight.
A disheveled, unkempt man smelling of sweat and filth stumbled out of a taxi.
His steps were erratic as he approached the entrance of the residential complex. After being cleared by security, he rushed inside.
This man was none other than Kendrick Walden, who had been missing for two days.
He let himself into Bryce Cameron's apartment.
Collapsing onto the sofa, his eyes were completely bloodshot.
Bryce handed him a glass of water, which he guzzled down greedily before finally finding the strength to speak.
"I was kidnapped. They locked me in a warehouse without food or water. They were going to starve me to death."
Bryce immediately went to mix him a glass of honey water and ordered some takeout.
"Who took you?"
Kendrick rubbed his face. He hadn't slept in two days.
His brain was barely functioning.
"I don't know. There were guards watching me around the clock. The one watching me stepped out today, and I finally got my chance to run."
Bryce stayed silent for a moment before saying, "Heath got into a car crash tonight. If he hadn't deliberately detached his prosthetic leg and crawled for his life, he would've burned to death."
Kendrick's eyes widened in horror. "Are you serious? That's blatant attempted murder! Yorath is trying to wipe us all out. First me, then Heath, and you're next. Anyone connected to the case from three years ago, he's going to silence."
"He didn't care about Ottilie before. Ignored her after they broke up. But now he's obsessed again, and to win her heart completely, he's using us as sacrifices."
Bryce pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a slow drag.
"It might not be Yorath."
"What do you mean?" Kendrick's eyes darted frantically as he tried to think of anyone else with a motive.
But he drew a complete blank.
Bryce said, "Yorath wants the truth about what happened three years ago to come out. He wants to clear Ottilie's name. If we all end up dead, who is going to testify to her innocence?"
Realization washed over Kendrick. "So the person trying to kill us is the one who wants to bury the truth. If we die, no one will ever know what actually happened."
